I Follow Feat Katie Herzig by Hidden Citizens: meaning explained

The song's central theme revolves around the intense observation of another person, as expressed in the repeated lines, 'I watch you live, I watch you breathe.' This establishes a sense of longing and attachment, while the phrase 'I follow' emphasizes a desire to be close to the subject, despite the emotional distance implied by the act of watching rather than participating. The juxtaposition of watching and following highlights the tension between desire and the inability to fully engage.

'I Follow' suggests a continuous pursuit or attachment, as seen in the lyric 'Anywhere you go, I follow.' This indicates a deep emotional connection, where the act of following symbolizes both support and an inability to break free from the emotional ties.

The line 'I watch you bleed, until you breathe again' conveys a duality of pain and resilience, suggesting that the observer is both a witness to suffering and a source of support. This complexity raises questions about the nature of their relationship, as the observer's role may be both protective and passive.

Listeners may resonate with the tension of wanting to support someone while feeling helpless, evoking a sense of empathy and reflection on their own relationships.

The song reflects the complexities of emotional attachment, illustrating how love can manifest as both support and observation.
